Ghosts of girlfriends past

Comfort zones don’t come much plusher than the one habitually occupied by Matthew McConaughey, who must read the words “arrogant, torso-flaunting alpha male” in script synopses and think: “That’ll do.” This bed-hopping playboy has been there, done J Lo in The Wedding Planner, Sarah Jessica Parker in Failure to Launch, and Kate Hudson – twice.

McConaughey’s childhood sweetheart is played by Jennifer Garner, whose job, while Connor is given a guided tour of his entire sexual history, is to stand around looking slighted. She’s capable of quite a lot more than this, and so is director Mark Waters (Freaky Friday, Mean Girls). Still, there’s an undertone of satisfying bitterness before the gloop sets in: the recriminations are just an ounce more cutting and tart than you’re ready for. McConaughey, who will be just as funny as Douglas in 20 years time, looks suitably chastened. There’s only one scene with his shirt off.
