HBO's 'Grey Gardens' shows life with the animals

HBO's new film adaptation of the lives of Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Little Edie, subjects immortalized in the 1975 Maysles documentary:

"Let's breed cats, Edie? Wouldn't that be fun?" -- Big Edie, played by Jessica Lange

"Of course I'm mad about animals, but raccoons and cats become a little bit boring, I mean, for too long a time." -- Little Edie, played by Drew Barrymore.

Jackie O tangles with the hags from “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?”.

That’s one way to interpret a climactic moment of HBO’s “Grey Gardens,” a black comedy starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore as Kennedy Onassis’ real-life aunt and cousin over a 40-year span.

Hopefully the new Grey Gardens will faithfully - and tenderly - relay this aspect of the Edies' characters - which might just rescue them from being mocked and disdained otherwise.
